Education in China

The fact that China is present everywhere could be appreciated even when we pay a visit to the pharmacy and see that the shelves are full of merchandise manufactured in this country.  Wherever we go, it is noticeable that most products such as hardware, entertainment products, sport merchandise, and construction materials are produced in China.  It seems this country has become a giant factory and storage resource for all others.

It is easy to notice the leading role China has played in the U.S. economy just by browsing any major newspaper. The first effort made by Hillary Clinton, on assuming office was to visit this country to make sure that China will continue to fund the excess costs of the U.S. budget. Currently, China has invested billions of dollars in various sectors of the U.S. market. Economies like Japan, Germany, England and Spain have constantly asked China to intervene in order to help balance their budget.

Due to the role China plays in the world when it comes to decision making, a group of Puerto Rican scientists, intellectuals, and researchers decided to outline how they can aid the rest of the population, by making it easier to understand the “Chinese phenomenon”.  This project, under the auspices of the Ana G. Mendez University System intended to produce a documentary, a book, and a series of newspaper articles to help achieve the group’s goal.  One of the outcomes of the visit was the filming of over 40 hours of video, in addition to taking over 5 thousand photos of China’s everyday life.  Schools, universities, shops, supermarkets and industries were visited.  The group also had the opportunity to interview common people in their workplaces, streets and parks.

This experience produced a documentary, a book, and a series published in a newspaper.  The book has generated such positive reviews and feedback that it had to be published in two editions, and it is currently available in Borders stores and online, at Amazon.com.  El Vocero, one of the most important newspapers in Puerto Rico published a daily article from February 14^th to February 19^th in 2005.  Similarly, Channel 4, WAPA TV aired daily reports during the same week.
